Pick the fixed parts first

Roof, stone, brick and windows are expensive to change, so they set the palette. Match the body color's undertone to them: a warm brown roof wants warm whites and greiges, a cool slate roof works with cooler grays and blues. Then choose trim and door. In the visualizer, set the roof first and the other choices get easier.

Contrast decides the character

Low contrast between body and trim (tone on tone) reads modern and quiet. High contrast, like white trim on navy, reads traditional and crisp. The front door is the one place a bold color almost always works. The ratios under the preview tell you which way your combination leans.

Outdoor light is brutal

Sunlight washes colors out. Most exterior colors look lighter and brighter on the house than on a chip, so many people go a shade darker than they think. Paint large sample boards and look at them at noon and at dusk. Browse the full guides on exterior color combinations or every color in the paint color library.

How it works

  1. Start from a combination

Pick a proven palette such as white with black gutters or navy with white trim.

  2. Change one part at a time

Choose a part of the house, then a color. The roof offers real shingle and metal finishes.

  3. Check the contrast

See how strongly the trim and door stand out from the body color.

  4. Try it on your house

Test samples outdoors, or repaint a photo of your own house with AI on a free account.

Questions

Is the house color visualizer free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign-up. Only the optional AI repaint of a photo of your own house needs a free account.

Are these real exterior paint colors?

Yes. Body, trim, gutter, shutter and door colors are real Sherwin-Williams, Benjamin Moore and Behr colors with their codes. Roof and wood options are descriptive finishes, not paint.

How do I choose a trim color for my house?

Pick the trim against the body color and the roof. For a crisp look choose a white with clear contrast; for a modern, quiet look choose a trim close to the body color. The contrast readout shows how strongly they differ.

Will the colors look the same on my house?

Not exactly. Screens differ and daylight makes exterior paint look lighter. Use the visualizer to narrow it down, then test large samples outdoors.
