Bathroom remodel cost calculator

Estimate your bathroom remodel from its size and scope: low, typical and high totals and how much is labor. Built on published national figures, cited below.

Scope

New cabinets, counters, fixtures and flooring in the same layout.

How this works: we multiply your size by the published installed range of $70-$250 per sq ft and use the lower, middle or upper third of that range for your scope. The thirds are our own arithmetic on the published range. Prices vary a lot by region and by home, so get at least three local bids.

Estimates, sources

These are planning estimates from published national figures, not quotes. Local labor, materials and site conditions move real prices a lot. Get at least three local bids.

The numbers behind the calculator

Small rooms cost more per square foot because plumbing, fixtures and tile work don't shrink with the floor. That's why the published per-sq-ft range is wide. Here are the national figures we use:

Labor is most of the bill

HomeAdvisor estimates labor at about 40% to 65% of a bathroom remodel. Keeping the toilet, shower and sink where they are avoids the most expensive labor: moving drains and supply lines. Tile choices are next; see the tile calculator and small bathroom remodel ideas on a budget.

Why there's no regional adjustment

There isn't a clean public multiplier for remodeling costs by region, so we don't invent one. Treat the result as a national ballpark and get at least three local bids.

How it works

  1. Enter the size

Floor area in square feet. A 5 x 8 ft hall bath is 40 sq ft.

  2. Pick a scope

Refresh, mid-range remodel, or a full / upscale gut job.

  3. Read the range

Low, typical and high totals, with the labor share split out.

  4. See it first

Try a new look on your own bathroom photo before you collect bids.

Questions

How much does a bathroom remodel cost?

HomeAdvisor puts a typical bathroom remodel at about $6,700 to $17,700, averaging around $12,000; Bob Vila cites $70 to $250 per sq ft. The 2025 Cost vs. Value report lists a midrange bathroom remodel at $26,138 and an upscale one at $81,612 nationally.

How much of a bathroom remodel is labor?

About 40% to 65% of the total, according to HomeAdvisor. Moving plumbing is the biggest labor cost, so keeping the layout saves the most.

How is this estimate calculated?

Your floor area times the published $70 to $250 per sq ft range, using the lower, middle or upper third for refresh, mid-range or full scope. The thirds are our own arithmetic. It is a planning estimate, not a quote.

What's the cheapest way to update a bathroom?

Keep the layout and the tub or shower, then change paint, lighting, mirror, hardware and the vanity top. Refinishing a tub or re-grouting tile costs far less than replacing them.
