Furniture spacing and walkway clearance planner

Leave 12 to 18 inches between the sofa and the coffee table, at least 30 inches from the coffee table to other furniture, and 36 inches for main walkways. Give each side of a bed you get in from about 30 inches, and leave 36 to 44 inches behind dining chairs where people pass.

Worked example

A living room that feels cramped

The coffee table sits 16 in from the sofa, 26 in from the TV stand, and the path from the door to the patio is 30 in wide.

  1. Sofa to coffee table: 16 in against 12-18 in: close enough to reach a drink, far enough for knees: OK.
  2. Coffee table to TV stand or chair: 26 in against 30 in, or 24 in in a narrow room: check.
  3. Main walkway through the room: 30 in against 36 in for a main walkway; 32 in only for a short pinch point: fix.

1 of 3 clearances pass: widen the walkway to 36 in first, for example by moving the chair that pinches it, then gain 4 in at the TV stand.

How we calculate

Each gap you measure is checked against a published number. Sofa to coffee table and coffee table to other furniture come from Ashley Furniture's coffee table guide. Walkways use 36 in, the NKBA's recommended walkway width, which matches the 2010 ADA Standards' 36 in for walking surfaces (ADA allows 32 in for a pinch point up to 24 in long, so we mark 32 to 36 in as a check, not a fail).

Behind dining chairs we use NKBA Kitchen Planning Guideline 8: 32 in from the table edge to the wall where nobody passes, 36 in for someone to edge past a seated diner and 44 in to walk past.

Beside a bed there is no residential code. The ADA Standards require a 30 × 48 in clear floor space beside the bed in accessible hotel rooms, so we use 30 in as the benchmark. Calling 24-30 in "tight but usable" is our assumption. The ADA figures are written for public buildings and lodging, not homes; we use them as a yardstick.

Estimates, sources

Planning estimates and published guidelines, not quotes, designs or code rulings. Figures were checked on each source on the date shown. Local prices, your home and your jurisdiction's adopted code decide the real answer.

  • Coffee table dimension guide (Ashley Furniture, as of Oct 26, 2026): 18 in from the sofa is the most accommodating, 12-18 in works; at least 30 in of open space to other furniture (24 in in narrower rooms); table about two-thirds the sofa length; same height as the seat or 1-2 in lower
  • Kitchen Planning Guidelines 7-9: walkway, traffic clearance at seating, seating clearance (National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), as of Oct 26, 2026): walkway at least 36 in; table edge to wall 32 in where no traffic passes behind a seated diner, at least 36 in to edge past, at least 44 in to walk past; a 24 in wide × 18 in deep knee space per diner at 30 in high tables
  • 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design (403.5.1, 305.3, 806.2.3) (U.S. Access Board, as of Oct 26, 2026): 403.5.1: walking surfaces 36 in clear minimum (32 in allowed for 24 in max); 305.3: clear floor space 30 × 48 in minimum; 806.2.3: that clear floor space on both sides of a bed in accessible sleeping rooms. Written for public and lodging buildings, used here as a benchmark for homes

How deep a living room needs to be

Add up the line from the sofa to the TV wall. With a 38 in deep sofa, an 18 in gap, a 24 in deep coffee table, 30 in to the TV stand and an 18 in deep stand, you need 128 in, about 10.7 ft, wall to wall. Those furniture depths are examples; measure your own.

Fixes that do not mean new furniture

Most failed checks come from one piece in the wrong spot.

  • Float the sofa off the wall only if the path behind it can be 36 in; otherwise push it back and route traffic in front.
  • Swap a rectangular coffee table for a round or oval one to free the walkway corners.
  • Turn the bed so the narrow side faces the door, or drop to one nightstand on the side you do not use.
  • Pull dining chairs onto the side away from the main path, where only 32 in is needed.

How to use this tool

  1. Pick the room

Living room, bedroom or dining room: each has its own gaps.

  2. Measure the gaps

Tape measure from edge to edge at the narrowest point, not center to center.

  3. Read the checks

Each gap shows OK, check or fix, with the rule it was measured against.

Questions

How much space should be between a couch and a coffee table?

12 to 18 inches. Ashley Furniture calls 18 in the most accommodating distance: close enough to reach a cup, far enough for your knees.

How wide should a walkway be in a living room?

36 inches for a main path, the NKBA's recommended walkway width and the ADA's minimum for walking surfaces. A short pinch point can drop to 32 in.

How much space do you need around a bed?

About 30 inches on each side you get in from, and 36 inches at the foot if it is a walkway. 24 in works on a side you only reach to make the bed.

How much room do you need behind a dining chair?

32 inches from the table edge to the wall if nobody walks behind, 36 inches for someone to squeeze past and 44 inches to walk past comfortably (NKBA).

How big should a coffee table be?

About two-thirds the length of the sofa, and the same height as the seat or 1 to 2 inches lower, per Ashley Furniture's guide.

Are these clearances building code?

No. Homes have no code for furniture spacing. These are published design guidelines (NKBA, Ashley) and the ADA Standards, used as a benchmark.
