- What Size Rug Do I Need? The Complete Rug Size Guide (Rugs.com, 2026): front legs on the rug; dining rug extends at least 24 in past the table; about 2 ft of rug around a bed
The three rules behind the numbers
Dining rooms: the rug should run at least 24 inches past every edge of the table, so chair legs stay on the rug when someone pulls out a seat. Bedrooms: about 2 feet of rug should show on each side of the bed and past the foot, which is why a queen usually takes an 8x10 and a king a 9x12. Living rooms: at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on the rug, and you leave a band of bare floor between rug and walls.
Too small is the common mistake
A rug that floats in the middle of the seating, touching no furniture, makes a room look smaller. If you're between two sizes, the larger one is usually right, as long as some floor still shows at the walls. Choosing colors too? Try the room palette generator.

Questions
What size rug goes under a queen bed?
Usually 8x10 feet, laid across the bed under its lower two thirds, so about 2 feet of rug shows on each side and at the foot. A king usually takes a 9x12.
How big should a dining room rug be?
At least 24 inches larger than the table on every side, so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. For a 42 x 72 inch table that's at least 7.5 x 10 feet, so an 8x10 rug.
Should the sofa sit on the rug?
At least the front legs should. With all legs on, the rug should extend several inches past the furniture. Either way, leave some bare floor between the rug and the walls.
What if the recommended size doesn't fit my room?
The calculator falls back to the largest standard size that leaves floor at the walls. You can also switch to a front-legs-only layout or order a custom size.
