When it works
Sea Salt is a pale blue-green with gray in it; in strong coastal sun it reads airy and light, while on a cloudy day it leans more gray-green. It has a high LRV, which keeps it cool-looking in hot climates. Extra White is a clean, bright white that keeps railings and trim crisp, and Hale Navy anchors the entry. It works well on small and mid-size cottages; on very large houses, the pale body can look washed out from a distance, so preview it from the street.
House styles it suits
Coastal homes, Cape Cods and cottages. Shingle siding, porches and white railings all suit the palette, and it looks natural next to sand, dune grass and weathered docks.
Roof, brick and stone
Weathered-wood shingles bring the silvery look of aged cedar; slate-gray works too. Coastal homes rarely use much brick, but gray or whitewashed brick and pale stone pair easily. Avoid orange brick, which fights the cool body.
Sheen and maintenance
Use low-sheen or satin on the body, which handles salt air and is easier to wash; satin or semi-gloss on trim; and semi-gloss on the Hale Navy door. Near the ocean, rinse siding periodically to remove salt deposits, and choose paint rated for coastal or high-humidity conditions. Navy on a sunny, west-facing entry can fade sooner, so plan to refresh it.
