When it works
Benjamin Moore Hale Navy (HC-154) is a grayed navy, so it reads rich instead of electric. Chantilly Lace (OC-65) on trim and gutters gives the sharpest possible contrast, and a natural cedar door adds warmth. Dark bodies have low light reflectance, so they make a house feel grounded and slightly smaller, which suits large or tall homes better than tiny ones. In full sun, Hale Navy can look lighter and bluer than its chip; in shade, nearly black. Paint large samples and check them morning and afternoon.
House styles it suits
Colonial, coastal, Cape Cod and craftsman homes all carry navy well. On craftsman houses, the white trim highlights brackets and tapered columns. It works especially well with clapboard or lap siding, where shadow lines add texture.
Roof, brick and stone
Charcoal shingles are the natural partner; pure black can merge with navy at a distance. Gray stone and whitewashed brick are excellent. Red brick with navy gives a collegiate, traditional feel that can look great if the brick reads deep red rather than orange.
Sheen and maintenance
Choose a low-sheen body finish; dark flat paint can show chalking and scuffs. Use satin on trim and a clear UV-protective finish on the cedar door. Dark colors fade faster on south and west walls, so pick a premium exterior paint and expect touch-ups there first.
Questions
Does a navy house fade quickly?
Dark colors fade faster than light ones, especially in harsh sun. Premium paint and a low-sheen finish slow it down.
Should navy house gutters be white or navy?
White gutters continue the trim outline. Navy gutters hide the run but make the roofline less defined.
What front door colors go with navy?
Natural wood, red, yellow or a glossy black all work. Wood is the warmest and most relaxed.
