Kitchen appliance budget calculator

A four-piece kitchen appliance package (refrigerator, range, dishwasher and microwave) costs about $2,300 to $3,700 at entry level, around $5,000 mid-range and $7,000 or more premium, based on retail package prices. NKBA guidance puts appliances at about 14% of a kitchen remodel, so a $40,000 remodel suggests about $5,600.

That is about 15% of a $40,000 remodel. NKBA guidance puts appliances at about 14%, or $5,600.

Our planning bands per appliance and tier, checked against retail package prices; sales, rebates and brand move real prices a lot. Installation assumes existing hookups: new gas lines, circuits or ducting cost extra.

Worked example

A mid-range four-piece package in a $40,000 remodel

Refrigerator, range, dishwasher and over-the-range microwave, all mid-range.

  1. Appliances: $4,000-$6,800 for the four.
  2. Installation allowance: $350-$1,000.
  3. Total: $4,350-$7,800, midpoint $6,100.
  4. NKBA's 14% of $40,000 = $5,600; the midpoint is 15% of the budget.

Budget about $6,100 for appliances, slightly above the $5,600 NKBA share, so shop sales or drop one appliance a tier.

How we calculate

Each appliance has a budget, mid-range and premium price band. These are our editorial planning bands, set so a standard four-piece set adds up to what retailers charge for packages: about $2,300 to $3,700 entry, around $5,000 mid and $7,000 or more premium (AJ Madison package listings).

We add an installation allowance per appliance that assumes the hookups already exist. Moving a range, adding a gas line, a 240 V circuit or new ducting costs extra and is not included.

If you enter your total remodel budget, we compare the appliance midpoint with NKBA's guidance of about 14% for appliances. Prices change with sales, rebates and brand, so treat the result as a budget line, not a shopping list.

Appliance price bands by tier

Our planning bands per appliance, before installation. Mix tiers: many kitchens put the money into the range and the refrigerator and keep the dishwasher and microwave mid-range.

Ways to keep the appliance line in check

Buy as a package when a retailer offers a bundle discount, and time the purchase around holiday sales. Keep appliance locations where they are: moving a range or a sink usually costs more in plumbing, gas and electrical work than the step up to a better model. Order early, because a late delivery holds up countertop templating.

  • Keep the same widths so cabinets and counters don't change.
  • Check the electrical and gas needs before you buy.
  • Size the hood to the range with the range hood CFM calculator.

Questions

How much does a kitchen appliance package cost?

Retail four-piece packages (refrigerator, range, dishwasher, microwave) run about $2,300 to $3,700 at entry level, around $5,000 mid-range and $7,000 or more premium, at sale prices.

What percentage of a kitchen remodel is appliances?

About 14%, according to NKBA budget guidance as reported by Money.com. Cabinets are the largest line at about 30%.

How much should I budget to install kitchen appliances?

With existing hookups, a few hundred dollars per appliance. New gas lines, circuits or hood ducting cost more and need a licensed trade.

Is it cheaper to buy kitchen appliances as a package?

Often. Retailers discount bundles and add rebates, and the finishes match. Compare the package price with the individual sale prices.

Should I buy appliances before or during a remodel?

Pick them before the cabinets are ordered, because the cabinet sizes and counter cutouts depend on them. Buy early enough that delivery does not delay templating.

Are these prices quotes?

No. They are planning bands. Brand, size, sales and rebates move real prices a lot.
