Borrowing $30,000 for a kitchen remodel over 10 years costs about $375 a month at an 8.67% home equity loan rate, or about $354 at a 7.36% HELOC rate, using Bankrate's October 2026 averages. Total interest on the home equity loan is about $15,000. Card-rate borrowing costs far more.

Worked example

Financing a $30,000 mid-range kitchen over 10 years

A $30,000 home equity loan at 8.67% APR, repaid monthly for 10 years (120 payments).

  1. Monthly rate r = 8.67% ÷ 12 = 0.7225%; n = 120 payments.
  2. Payment = 30,000 × 0.007225 ÷ (1 − 1.007225^−120) = $374.69.
  3. Total paid = $374.69 × 120 = $44,963.
  4. Interest = $44,963 − $30,000 = $14,963.

About $374.69 a month and $14,963 in interest over 10 years.

How we calculate

Enter the amount, the term and how you plan to pay. The calculator uses the standard amortization formula the CFPB describes, where each fixed payment covers that month's interest and pays down some principal, and it handles a 0% promotional rate as a straight split.

The HELOC and home equity rates default to Bankrate's national averages for October 2026. The personal-loan and credit-card rates are examples only, because they depend heavily on your credit; replace every rate with the offers you actually get.

A HELOC is shown as if it were repaid like a loan at today's rate. Real HELOCs have variable rates and are often interest-only during the draw period, so early payments can be lower and later ones higher. This is a planning tool, not financial advice.

Estimates, sources

Planning estimates and published guidelines, not quotes, designs or code rulings. Local prices, your home and your jurisdiction's adopted code decide the real answer: get local bids and check with your inspector.

Monthly payment by financing type

The same $30,000 over 10 years, priced at each product's default rate. Home equity products are cheaper because your house secures them, which also means you can lose the house if you cannot pay. Unsecured loans and cards cost more but put nothing at risk except your credit.

Shorter term or lower payment?

A longer term lowers the payment and raises the total interest. Pick the shortest term you can carry comfortably alongside your other bills, and check whether the loan lets you pay extra without a penalty.

How to borrow less

Settle the design before you borrow, keep the sink and range where they are, and price refacing or painting the cabinets before you replace them. Every change order is borrowed money with interest on top.

Questions

What is the monthly payment on a $30,000 kitchen remodel loan?

About $374.69 a month over 10 years at 8.67% APR, the October 2026 average for a home equity loan. At a 7.36% HELOC rate it is about $353.92, but HELOC rates are variable.

Is a HELOC or a home equity loan better for a kitchen remodel?

A home equity loan gives a fixed rate and a fixed payment, which suits a one-time project with a known price. A HELOC lets you draw as bills arrive and usually starts cheaper, but its rate can rise. Both use your home as collateral.

What are current HELOC and home equity rates?

Bankrate's national averages in October 2026 were 7.36% for HELOCs and 8.67% for a 5-year, $30,000 home equity loan. Your rate depends on your credit, equity and lender.

Should I put a kitchen remodel on a credit card?

Only a small part you can pay off quickly, or under a genuine 0% promotion you will clear before it ends. At a 22% example card rate, repaying $30,000 over 10 years costs about $44,411 in interest, versus about $14,963 on an 8.67% home equity loan.

Does the payment include fees?

No. Home equity products can carry closing costs, appraisal, origination or annual fees. Ask each lender for the APR and the total fees, then compare.

Is this financial advice?

No. It is arithmetic on the rates you enter. Compare real offers, read the terms and talk to a lender or advisor about what fits your situation.
