How to plan a kitchen remodel with these tools
Most kitchen budgets go wrong in the same order: the number is set too late, the layout changes after cabinets are priced, and the specs (hood, outlets, lighting) are left to the installer. Work through the tools in this order and each answer feeds the next.
1. Set the budget
Start from your home's value and the resale data, then decide how to pay for it.
2. Check the layout
Make sure the work triangle, aisles, island and storage work before you price anything.
3. Price the big lines
Cabinets, counters, backsplash and appliances are most of the bill.
4. Get the specs right
Hood airflow, lighting, outlets, sink and hardware are cheap to plan and costly to fix.
5. Choose the look
Find your style and colors, then see them on your own kitchen.
How we calculate
Each tool does plain, visible arithmetic on published figures, and shows the formula, a worked example and its sources on the page. Clearances, landing areas and storage come from the NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines. Outlet rules come from the 2023 National Electrical Code (NFPA 70) and hood rules from HVI and the International Residential Code. Prices come from named cost guides (HomeAdvisor, Fixr, Block Renovation, Homewyse, the 2025 Cost vs. Value report) and loan rates from Bankrate, each with its publication year or the date we last checked it.
Where we had to assume something, such as pieces per foot of cabinet or a lighting light-loss factor, the page says so and the widget lets you change it. Results are planning numbers, not quotes or code rulings.

Questions
Are these kitchen tools free?
Yes. All 20 calculators and planners run in your browser, cost nothing and need no account. Only the AI redesign of your own kitchen photo needs a free account; eligible new accounts get free credits once the email is verified, and free results carry a small watermark.
Where do the numbers come from?
Each tool lists its sources with links: NKBA Kitchen Planning Guidelines for clearances and storage, NEC and IRC references for outlets and ventilation, HVI for hood sizing, and published cost guides such as HomeAdvisor and the 2025 Cost vs. Value report for prices.
Are the cost results quotes?
No. They are planning estimates from national figures. Local labor, materials and your home's condition move real prices a lot, so get at least three itemized local bids.
Do the code checks replace an inspector?
No. The outlet, ventilation and clearance tools apply published guidelines and model code rules as planning checks. Your jurisdiction's adopted code and your inspector decide what is required.
Which tool should I start with?
Start with the remodel budget calculator to set a number, check the layout with the work triangle and island tools, then price cabinets and counters, which are most of the bill.
