Countertop square footage and cost calculator
Countertop square footage is each run's length times its depth (usually 25.5 inches), minus the corner overlap, plus the island. A typical kitchen has 30 to 50 square feet. Installed, Block Renovation puts laminate at $20 to $60 per square foot, quartz at $40 to $100 and granite at $70 to $230.

Measure each run along the wall from end to end, through the corner. Where two runs meet we subtract the corner square once so it is not counted twice. Sink and cooktop cutouts are not subtracted: fabricators charge for the slab they cut them from.

Planning estimate, not a quote. Stone is sold by the slab, and a slab is often about 10 ft long, so long runs and big islands may need a seam or a second slab. Edge profiles, cutouts, removal of old tops and plumbing reconnection can add to the bill.

Worked example
An L-shaped kitchen with a 6 ft island, in quartz
Two wall runs of 10 ft and 8 ft meeting in one corner, 25.5 in deep, plus a 6 ft × 36 in island. No stone backsplash.
- Wall runs: (10 + 8) ft × 25.5 in ÷ 144 = 38.25 sq ft, minus one corner square of 4.52 sq ft = 33.7 sq ft.
- Island: 6 ft × 36 in ÷ 12 = 18 sq ft.
- Total: 51.7 sq ft.
- Quartz at $40-$100 per sq ft: $2,050-$5,150. Laminate for comparison: $1,050-$3,100.
About 52 sq ft of counter: roughly $2,050-$5,150 installed in quartz.
How we calculate
Enter each counter run measured along the wall, the depth, and the island if you have one. For an L or U, measure each run through the corner; we subtract the corner square (depth × depth) once per corner so it is not counted twice. A backsplash in the same material, such as a 4 in stone curb, is added as run length × height.
We multiply the total by the installed price bands per square foot that Block Renovation publishes (updated July 2026), used exactly as published. Block does not list solid surface, so that band ($50-$150) comes from Inch Calculator's guide, last updated September 2023. Those bands include fabrication and installation but not removal of old tops, special edges or plumbing reconnection.
Sink and cooktop cutouts are not subtracted, because the fabricator still buys and cuts the stone around them. The seam flag uses a typical slab length of about 10 ft; that figure is our planning assumption, since slab sizes vary by brand and stone.

- Kitchen Planning Guidelines with Access Standards (National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), 2015): work triangle 26 ft max, legs 4-9 ft; aisles 42 in (one cook) / 48 in (two); walkways 36 in; seating clearance 32/36/44 in; knee space 24 in wide; landing areas; 150 cfm ventilation; storage frontage

Countertop cost by material
The spread inside each material is as wide as the gap between them. A builder-grade granite can cost less than a premium laminate, and quartz brands vary a lot by pattern. Price your actual slab, not the material in general.
| Material | Per sq ft installed | 40 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate | $20-$60 | $800-$2,400 |
| Butcher block | $30-$280 | $1,200-$11,200 |
| Solid surface | $50-$150 | $2,000-$6,000 |
| Granite | $70-$230 | $2,800-$9,200 |
| Quartz | $40-$100 | $1,600-$4,000 |
| Marble | $70-$230 | $2,800-$9,200 |
How to measure for countertops
Measure along the back wall, from the end of each run into the corner, and note the depth from the wall to the front edge of the cabinets plus the overhang you want. Islands are length × depth; a seating overhang adds to the depth, so measure to where the top will end, not to the cabinet face.
Write down the sink and cooktop sizes too. The fabricator will template the final shape, but your square footage tells you what to expect when the quote arrives.
- Standard wall counter: 25.5 in deep.
- Island with seating at 36 in high: allow a 15 in deep knee space per seat (NKBA), usually a 12-15 in overhang.
- Seams: runs or islands longer than about 10 ft usually need a seam or a jumbo slab.
Where countertop budgets go wrong
Edge profiles, extra cutouts (a second sink, a pop-up outlet), a thicker or mitered edge on the island, tearing out old tile tops and moving the plumbing all add to the bill. Ask each fabricator to quote per square foot and list those extras so you can compare like with like.

Questions
How do I calculate countertop square footage?
Multiply each run's length by its depth, both in inches, and divide by 144. For an L or U, subtract the corner square once per corner so it is not counted twice, then add the island. A 10 ft and an 8 ft run at 25.5 in deep come to about 33.7 sq ft.
How many square feet of countertop does an average kitchen have?
Block Renovation puts a typical kitchen at 30 to 40 square feet; with an island it is often 40 to 50. NKBA guidelines call for 158 inches of counter frontage, 24 inches deep, as a working minimum.
How much do quartz countertops cost?
About $40 to $100 per square foot installed, per Block Renovation's 2026 guide. For a 40 sq ft kitchen that is roughly $1,600 to $4,000, before extras such as edge profiles and removal of the old tops.
Is granite cheaper than quartz?
Not in current published ranges: Block Renovation lists granite at $70 to $230 per square foot installed and quartz at $40 to $100. The slab you pick still matters more than the material: a common granite can undercut a premium quartz, and exotic stones cost far more.
What is the cheapest countertop material?
Laminate, at about $20 to $60 per square foot installed. Basic edge-grain butcher block and builder-grade quartz can start near $30 to $40 per square foot; solid surface starts around $50.
Do I subtract the sink cutout from the square footage?
No. Fabricators charge for the stone the top is cut from, including the sink and cooktop openings, and often charge extra for each cutout.
When does a countertop need a seam?
When a run or island is longer than the slab. Many slabs are about 10 ft long, so longer pieces usually need a seam or a jumbo slab; ask your fabricator where they would put it.
