Kitchen cabinet and countertop color combinations
The safest kitchen cabinet and countertop combinations pair dark or colored cabinets with a light counter, or light cabinets with one warm or dark surface. Navy with white quartz and brass, sage with butcher block, black with white quartz, and white with soapstone or wood all work. Pick a cabinet color for 2-3 matching counters.

How we calculate
Choose a cabinet color and the tool returns two or three countertop options, a backsplash, a wall color and a hardware finish, plus the five-color palette they make. Switch countertops to see how the palette and the contrast change.
Cabinet and wall colors are real paints from our paint library, with the brand's name and code. Their on-screen hex values are approximations, and the countertop, backsplash and hardware swatches are our own approximations of typical materials. The pairings themselves are our editorial design guidance, not a rule.
The contrast line uses the WCAG contrast ratio between the cabinet and the counter or wall. Here it measures how bold the pairing reads, not accessibility: under 1.6:1 is tonal, 3:1 or more is clear contrast, 7:1 or more is bold.

Four rules that make kitchen colors work
These hold across styles. Break one on purpose, not by accident.
- Contrast the biggest surfaces: dark cabinets with light counters, or light cabinets with one dark or wooden surface.
- Match undertones: creamy whites with warm stone and brass; crisp whites with cool marble, nickel or black.
- Keep the backsplash quieter than either the cabinets or the counter, unless it is the one bold piece.
- Repeat the hardware metal in lighting or the faucet so it looks chosen, not random.
Check colors in your own kitchen light
North light cools and grays colors, south light warms them, and under-cabinet LEDs change the counter more than you expect. Paint large samples, put them next to a real countertop sample, and look at them morning and evening. Or upload a photo of your kitchen and see the whole palette in place first.

Questions
What countertop color goes with navy cabinets?
White or warm white quartz with soft gray or gold veining, or a honed marble. Oak butcher block on an island adds warmth. Brass or polished nickel hardware finishes it.
What countertops go with white cabinets?
Give white cabinets one surface with weight: oak or walnut butcher block for warmth, black soapstone or granite for contrast, or a veined quartz if you want an all-light kitchen. All-white with white counters reads tonal and can feel flat.
What goes with sage green kitchen cabinets?
Warm wood counters, warm white quartz or creamy marble, cream zellige tile, warm white walls such as Sherwin-Williams Alabaster, and aged or unlacquered brass.
What countertop goes with black cabinets?
Light counters, usually white quartz, or wood to soften them. Keep the walls bright and the backsplash simple so the room does not feel dark.
Should cabinets be lighter or darker than the countertop?
Either works; what matters is a clear difference between the two biggest surfaces. Dark cabinets with light counters is the most common; light cabinets with a dark or wood counter is the classic alternative.
Are the colors on screen exact?
No. Paint names and codes are real, but screen colors are approximations, and countertop and tile swatches are typical examples. Always check physical samples in your own light.
Can I see these colors on my own kitchen?
Yes. The button under the result opens the AI studio with this palette and a matching style; you upload a kitchen photo and render it with a free account (eligible new accounts get free credits once the email is verified; free results are watermarked).
