Kitchen backsplash calculator
Backsplash area is the counter run times the height between counter and wall cabinets, usually 18 inches, minus windows. Twenty feet of counter is about 30 square feet. Add 10% waste for straight layouts or 15% for diagonal and herringbone. Installed tile backsplash averages $33 to $56 per square foot (Homewyse).

Measure the wall between the counter and the wall cabinets along every run you will tile. Subtract windows; outlets and switches are too small to matter. If you tile the range wall up to the hood, enter the range width and how much taller that section is.

Worked example
A 20 ft run of 3 × 6 subway tile
20 ft of counter, 18 in from counter to wall cabinets, one 6 sq ft window, ceramic 3 × 6 in subway tile in a straight offset pattern, 10 sq ft per box.
- Wall area: 20 ft × 1.5 ft = 30 sq ft, minus the 6 sq ft window = 24 sq ft.
- With 10% waste: 26.4 sq ft to order.
- Tiles: 26.4 ÷ 0.125 sq ft per tile = 212 tiles, or 3 boxes.
- Installed: 24 sq ft × $32.95-$56.21 = $800-$1,350. DIY ceramic: $150-$350.
212 subway tiles (3 boxes): about $800-$1,350 installed, or $150-$350 in DIY materials.
How we calculate
Area is counter length × backsplash height, minus windows and other large openings, plus any taller tiled section behind the range. Outlets and switches are too small to subtract.
We add waste for the pattern: 10% for straight, stacked or offset layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone, in line with the tile-waste guidance our tile calculator already cites. Tile count is the area with waste divided by one tile's face; boxes use the coverage printed on the box.
The installed price is Homewyse's national kitchen backsplash estimate per square foot. The DIY price is tile plus a $2-$4 per sq ft allowance for thinset, grout and sealer. The tile bands by type ($3-$10 ceramic up to $15-$40 natural stone) are our rough editorial ranges, not a published survey.

- Kitchen Planning Guidelines with Access Standards (National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA), 2015): work triangle 26 ft max, legs 4-9 ft; aisles 42 in (one cook) / 48 in (two); walkways 36 in; seating clearance 32/36/44 in; knee space 24 in wide; landing areas; 150 cfm ventilation; storage frontage
Backsplash tile cost by type
Tile is usually the smaller part of a professional backsplash bill; the labor of cutting around outlets, windows and cabinet ends is the bigger part. That is why a small, fiddly backsplash costs more per square foot than a long straight one.
| Tile type | Per sq ft | 30 sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Ceramic | $3-$10 | $100-$300 |
| Porcelain | $5-$15 | $150-$450 |
| Glass | $15-$30 | $450-$900 |
| Natural stone | $15-$40 | $450-$1,200 |
How to measure a backsplash
Measure each wall run between the counter and the underside of the wall cabinets. Where there are no wall cabinets, decide where the tile stops: at a window sill, at the hood, or at the ceiling. Behind a range, many people tile up to the hood for easier cleaning; add that taller section separately.
- Standard height: 18 in, which also gives the 15 in of clearance above the counter that NKBA guidelines call for.
- Subtract windows; ignore outlets and switches.
- Buy every box from the same lot and keep one spare for repairs.
DIY or hire a tiler?
A straight subway backsplash is a reasonable first tiling job: a wet saw or snap cutter, thinset, spacers and grout. Herringbone, natural stone and large porcelain panels are less forgiving. If you hire out, ask for a price that includes outlet extenders and edge trim, which are easy to forget.

Questions
How many square feet is a kitchen backsplash?
Counter length × backsplash height. Twenty feet of counter at the standard 18 in height is 30 sq ft before windows. Most kitchens fall between 20 and 40 sq ft.
How much extra backsplash tile should I buy?
Add 10% for straight, stacked or offset layouts and 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns. Keep one spare box from the same lot for future repairs.
How much does it cost to install a kitchen backsplash?
Homewyse estimates about $33 to $56 per square foot installed for a kitchen backsplash (May 2026). A 30 sq ft backsplash is roughly $1,000 to $1,700, depending on tile, cuts and your area.
How many 3 × 6 subway tiles are in a square foot?
Eight. Each 3 × 6 in tile covers 18 sq in, and a square foot is 144 sq in. Grout joints add slightly to the coverage, which is part of why you still add waste.
How high should a kitchen backsplash be?
Usually 18 in, from the counter to the bottom of the wall cabinets. Without wall cabinets, many people take it to the hood, a window sill or the ceiling.
Is it cheaper to do a backsplash yourself?
Usually. DIY materials for a 24 sq ft ceramic backsplash come to about $150-$350 in this tool's estimate, against about $800-$1,350 installed. You trade that saving for tools and a weekend or two.
