Worked example

A 25-foot L-shaped kitchen in semi-custom cabinets

Two walls of cabinets, 13 ft and 12 ft, both with uppers and lowers. No island. Semi-custom grade.

  1. Run length: 13 ft + 12 ft = 25 linear feet.
  2. Semi-custom: 25 × $150 = $3,800 up to 25 × $650 = $16,300.
  3. Refacing the same run instead: 25 × $150-$450 = $3,800-$11,300.
  4. Painting 38 pieces professionally (25 doors at $70-$125, 13 drawer fronts at $30-$110): $2,150-$4,550.

New semi-custom cabinets: about $3,800-$16,300 installed; painting the existing ones: about $2,150-$4,550.

How we calculate

You enter the length of your cabinet run in linear feet: measure along the wall wherever there are cabinets, counting a wall with both uppers and lowers once, and add the island if it has cabinet boxes. That is how cabinet shops and cost guides quote.

We multiply that length by HomeAdvisor's installed price band for the grade you pick: stock, semi-custom or custom. Refacing uses HomeAdvisor's refacing band. Professional painting uses Fixr's separate prices for doors ($70-$125) and drawer fronts ($30-$110). We estimate 1.5 pieces per linear foot unless you type your own count, and assume two doors per drawer front. Those two ratios are our planning averages, not published figures.

Results are rounded to $100 because the spread between a budget and a premium line of the same grade is wide. Treat the range as a budget check before you collect quotes, not as a price.

Estimates, sources

Planning estimates and published guidelines, not quotes, designs or code rulings. Local prices, your home and your jurisdiction's adopted code decide the real answer: get local bids and check with your inspector.

Cabinet cost by grade

Grade sets the price more than anything else. Stock lines come in fixed widths and a short list of finishes; semi-custom adds sizes, finishes and interior fittings on standard boxes; custom is built to your room. Construction matters inside each grade too: plywood boxes, dovetail drawers and soft-close hardware push a line toward the top of its band.

Installed cabinet cost per linear foot and for a 25 ft run
GradePer linear foot25 ft run
Stock$100-$300$2,500-$7,500
Semi-custom$150-$650$3,800-$16,300
Custom$500-$1200$12,500-$30,000

Replace, reface or paint?

If the boxes are sound and the layout works, refacing or painting keeps most of the money in your pocket. Refacing replaces doors and drawer fronts and covers the boxes in veneer; painting keeps everything and changes the color. Replacing makes sense when the boxes are damaged, the layout is changing, or you need different sizes.

Painting is the cheapest visible change, but it only works on sound wood or MDF doors. Thermofoil and some laminates need refacing instead.

  • Replace: new layout, damaged boxes, or a different cabinet height.
  • Reface: good boxes, dated doors, and you want a new door style.
  • Paint: good boxes and doors, and you mainly want a new color.

Where cabinet budgets go wrong

The common surprises are fillers and end panels, crown molding, a tall pantry or oven cabinet (each costs several base cabinets' worth), and the labor to remove and haul away the old boxes. Ask every bidder to price the same list, door by door, so the quotes are comparable.

How to use this tool
